The Kirana Hills, rising abruptly from the plains of Pakistan's Punjab province, sit a mere ten kilometers from Sargodha, home to the Mushaf Airbase, one of the Pakistani Air Force’s premier operational hubs.

The site occupies a pivotal, if shadowy, place in regional military history. During the late 1970s and 1980s, as Pakistan pursued parity following India's first nuclear detonation in 1974, Kirana Hills served as a primary testing ground for subcritical experiments. Beneath these craggy ridges, scientists conducted essential non-nuclear high-explosive tests designed to verify weapon implosion designs without triggering an actual nuclear yield. While the final underground detonations that sealed Pakistan's status as a declared nuclear state took place in the Chagai district of Balochistan in 1998, the early technical foundation was laid in Kirana.

Whether the site currently houses enriched uranium, gas centrifuges, or active nuclear warheads remains guarded behind layers of state secrecy. Yet its enduring association with Pakistan's strategic program renders any military activity in its immediate vicinity extraordinarily sensitive.

In the friction of real-time combat, an accidental strike caused by a stray weapon, guidance failure, or lost loitering munition is easily misconstrued as a deliberate attempt to disarm an adversary’s nuclear triad. Such miscalculations threaten to instantly blur the boundary between conventional skirmishes and nuclear escalation. Reports of specialized radiation containment equipment, such as boron-laden response units, being monitored during the heightened tension illustrate how quickly foreign observers and local commanders brace for catastrophic outcomes when signals are crossed.

The Resilience of Deterrence

Since signing the Non-Nuclear Attack Agreement in 1988, which came into force in 1991, India and Pakistan have annually exchanged lists of nuclear installations to prevent targeted attacks on nuclear assets. Nuclear weapons continue to act primarily as instruments of deterrence rather than active battlefield tools. A declared nuclear power remains profoundly reluctant to initiate a strike against another nuclear-armed state, well aware that the resulting retaliatory strike would be ruinous.

However, formal agreements and mutual deterrence depend heavily on clear spatial separation and fault-free tactical execution.
